What Causes Man Boobs

Man Boobs, commonly known as Gynecomastia, is more common than one might think. In fact, an estimated 15 million men in the United States, or 15% of the United States male population, actually has Gynecomastia. Man boobs can occur in males at any age, starting at birth.

In the case of newborns, however, the cause is usually estrogen from the mother. Luckily, this is a temporary problem for newborn males with Gynecomastia, and it usually goes away, without treatment, within a few weeks. For some, however, the condition can be permanent, although this is very rare.

Teenage boys can also develop male boobs, typically about the time that they start puberty. Puberty, which is already a difficult time in anyone’s life, is caused by hormonal changes, and these hormonal changes can also cause Gynecomastia in males, around the ages of thirteen or fourteen. In fact, about one third of all teen boys develop man boobs.

It is extremely rare for a young boy to develop male boobs past the stage of being a newborn, on up to the point where he is a young teenager. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen, of course. Some experts believe that it is the use of tea tree oil, lavender, and some lotions or oils that cause Gynecomastia in pre-teen males, but the cause could also be related to a tumor, which produces estrogen.

Adult males also get man boobs. Unfortunately, for adult men, the cause of gynecomastia is not as easy as that for young boys. In fact, the cause of man boobs in adult males is typically more serious. Common causes include medications used to treat the heart, epilepsy, ulcers, anxiety, and cancer. Other medications that can cause man boobs include steroids, and antiandrogens.

There are also other medicinal causes of male boobs in adult males, including the use of methamphetamines, heroin, alcohol, and marijuana. If more young males were aware of the risk of developing male boobs from the use of these substances, we might not have the huge drug problem that we have today.

But, it isn’t just medication – whether legal or illegal - that can cause male boobs in adult males. Certain conditions can also cause this condition, including an overactive thyroid, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, lung cancer, pituitary gland cancer, adrenal gland cancer, and cancer of the testicles.

As you can see, there are many reasons why a male may develop man boobs. The important thing to remember, however, is that there is always a cause, even if your doctor has not yet found the cause. If you notice that you are starting to develop man boobs, you should seek attention from your health care provider as soon as possible, in order to find the underlying cause. The good news is that often, when the underlying cause is found and treated, the male boobs go away.
