Surgical Reduction of Man Boobs

Although most men don’t understand it, many women have surgery to reduce, instead of to increase, the size of their breasts. What also does not occur to most men is that sometimes men also need surgical reduction of man boobs. If you have male boobs, do you need a surgical reduction to rectify the problem?

First note that breast reduction surgery is not an option for all men who suffer from gynecomastia, which is the medical term for man boobs. It is wise to first determine whether your case of gynecomastia is actually permanent or not, and if it isn’t, surgery may not be the best option for you. On the other hand, if your man boob condition is permanent, this can cause serious emotional problems in your life, and surgery may be something that you want to consider.

Breast reduction surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon. You will need to make an appointment with at least one, and possibly two surgeons to ensure that you are getting the right information. In most cases, your regular health care provider can recommend a surgeon for breast reduction surgery for men. Note that there may be several appointments with the surgeon before the actual surgery takes place. This is a serious – permanent – decision.

Breast reduction surgery takes about two hours, and general anesthesia is given. This procedure usually requires a hospital stay – at least overnight – but depending on the amount of work that needs to be done, your general health, and your surgeon’s preferences, you may have the procedure performed as an out-patient, with just day-surgery.

During surgery, in most cases, a drainage tube will be inserted, and this tube may remain in place until several days after the surgery has taken place. This tube is essential to the healing process. You will also be outfitted with a bandage that feels rather tight, because it is applying pressure. This compression bandage is also necessary, and the bandage and the drainage tube work together to keep the swelling down after surgery.

During the procedure, the excess tissue in the breasts is removed with the use of a scalpel. It is literally cut away. The surgeon makes the initial incision around the areola. Liposuction may also be performed if excess fat – as opposed to excess tissue – is present. If liposuction is performed, the incision may not be at the areola. Instead, it may actually be made under the armpit. If the man boobs were rather large, and a great deal of tissue and fat was removed, the surgeon may find it necessary to remove excess skin as well.

The more that has to be done during the surgery, the longer it will take for recovery. Most surgeons suggest that their patients do little or nothing the first week after surgery. After the first week, you can start living life again, but you must do so carefully, and after the third week, you can start doing light exercises. You are not healed enough to do anything strenuous, however, for at least six to eight weeks.

Again, surgery for man boobs is common, but serious, as is any type of surgery. Make sure that you discuss the option carefully with your health care provider, and that you have all of the necessary information to make an informed decision before choosing this option.
