Obesity and Man Boobs

Many people mistakenly think that man boobs, or gynecomastia, is caused by obesity. This, actually, isn’t true at all. It is true that being obese can make a man have the appearance of having man boobs, but in reality, gynecomastia is actually a condition that exists because of an underlying health problem, which does not include obesity.

The man boobs that appear because of obesity are actually made up of fat in the chest area, or chest fat. By losing the weight, and working out, a man can easily get rid of the chest fat, and make the man boobs disappear.

On the other hand, if the man boobs are caused by gynecomastia, the underlying health condition must be identified and treated first, although the condition is not always caused by a health condition, per se. It can also be caused by medications taken for a health condition, including illegal drugs which are abused, as well as alcoholism, which in fact could be considered a health problem.

So, if you have the appearance of man boobs, the first thing you must do is rule out gynecomastia by visiting your doctor for an exam. It is always helpful to your doctor if you can tell him how much – in inches – your man boobs have grown over a certain period of time. This information will help him to diagnose gynecomastia or chest fat, as the situation dictates.

Your doctor may still need to perform a series of exams and/or tests to determine if any medical condition exists that could be causing your man boobs, unless the cause – obesity – is evident. Even then, there could still be an underlying health issue that must be dealt with. These health issues could be anything from a thyroid problem to cancer to a problem with your liver. If the male is in his teens, the man boobs could be caused by simple puberty, and in most of these cases, the situation is rectified once puberty has passed, without medical intervention.

If chest fat is diagnosed as the cause of your man boobs, remember that you can do something about it. In most cases, you need to change your diet and start exercising regularly. Not only do you need to exercise for the purpose of burning off fat and calories, you also need to do body building and body toning exercises to regain the manly chest that you once had.

Furthermore, it is important to note that man boobs caused by chest fat have a slightly different appearance than man boobs caused by gynecomastia. Those caused by chest fat look more like rolls of fat, man boobs that are actually gynecomastia look more like actual female breasts.

If you feel like you are in need of a bra, and you are male, it is probably past time to see a doctor. Note, however, that regardless of the cause of your man boobs, there is usually something that can be done about it, with the proper diagnosis and treatment.
