Diagnosing Gynecomastia

Each day, you look in the mirror for visual changes in your breast size. Before you know it, you have the tape measure out daily taking measurements. Your breasts are getting bigger. The problem is that you are a man. Is it man boobs or chest fat? Man boobs, or gynecomastia, is more common than one might think, but how exactly is it diagnosed?

First, let’s look at the symptoms of man boobs. Obviously, the size of your breasts increases. There are three stages, in medical terms, of this increase. These are termed as Grade I Gynecomastia, which is a very minor increase in breast tissue, but is not visibly noticeable. Grade II Gynecomastia is slightly noticeable, with an increase in breast size, but there may not be any extra skin formed. Grade III Gynecomastia indicates a large increase in breast size, and extra skin is present, making the man boobs have the appearance of female breasts.

When you visit your doctor for a diagnosis of man boobs, or Gynecomastia, he will start with a medical history, and follow this with a physical exam. He may also draw blood for various tests, including liver testing and hormone testing. A urine test is also common. Once he has the results of these tests, he may refer you to an endocrinologist for further testing and a diagnosis. An Endocrinologist specializes in hormone production. You may need a Mammography as well, better known as a mammogram.

Once Gynecomastia has been diagnosed, your doctor will look for the cause of it. There are various causes, including medical conditions, the use of certain prescription medications, and the use of illegal drugs, as well as excessive use of alcoholic beverages. Most doctors will test for various medical conditions known to cause man boobs, before they even consider treating the gynecomastia, because underlying health problems can actually be life threatening, while the man boob condition isn’t life threatening.

Once the underlying cause of Gynecomastia has been identified and treated, your doctor will work with you to cure the gynecomastia. In some cases, there is no cure other than a surgical breast reduction. In other cases, the man boobs will decrease on their own without medical intervention. In some cases, there is treatment available, other than surgery, to reduce the size of the breast tissue.

If you notice that you are developing man boobs, realize that this could be an indication of a serious health problem. It is very important that you seek medical advice, and follow your doctor’s orders. Man boobs may not be life threatening, but the underlying condition may very well be. Furthermore, it is important to get more than one medical opinion as well. Most insurance companies will pay for second opinions before treatment begins. Take advantage of that for your own well being.
